This was an interesting find from tonight. It seems that everyone knows what the qualifications are, but no one is responsible for checking them. I'm hoping Mr. Bontrager can help me locate someone, anyone, who is legally responsible for checking the Presidential candidates' qualifications.
Here is my letter to Randy Borntrager, Communications Director, Ohio Democratic Party:
Mr. Borntrager,
At http://www.sos.state.oh.us/SOS/candidates/Presidential%20Candidates.aspx it states that:
"A candidate for the office of President of the United States must be a natural born citizen of the United States, a U.S. resident for at least 14 years, and at least 35 years old on or before the day of the election. (U.S. Constitution, Article II, section 1).
A candidate for the office of Vice-President of the United States must have the same qualifications as a candidate for President. The candidate for Vice-President shall not be an inhabitant of the same state as the candidate for President.
Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates must file jointly with, or be certified jointly to, the Ohio Secretary of State’s office (U.S. Constitution, Amendment XII; R.C. 3513.041, 3513.12, 3513.121)."
It also states that you are the individual to contact for inquiries about the requirements to become a Presidential candidate in your state.
Would you be so kind as to tell me who has the legal responsibility to certify candidates to the Ohio Secretary of State's office? If you have contact information for that individual, I would greatly appreciate it if you would provide that as well.
Thank you very much for your time.
Your Fellow Citizen,
Justin W. Riggs
